En los últimos años, las playas de Cabo Verde han visto un aumento en la nidificación de tortugas marinas. Esto a simple vista puede resultar una gran noticia, pero este crecimiento también trae nuevos desafíos: más tortugas desorientadas, atrapadas entre rocas y en peligro de no llegar al mar.
En 2024, 1.012 tortugas fueron rescatadas por el equipo de Cabo Verde Natura 2000 y al menos 14 adultas fueron registradas como cazadas en nuestra área.
Sabemos que la mejor forma de protegerlas de sus múltiples amenazas es contando con el apoyo de la comunidad y que sean los guardianes de estas especies.
¿Cómo lo logramos?
Desde hace más de 25 años nos dedicamos a garantizar que las tortugas marinas encuentren un lugar seguro para su reproducción en la isla de Boa Vista. Para ello, instalamos dos campamentos base, muy alejadas de los pueblos, cubriendo 15 km de playas de junio a octubre.
Nuestro equipo está formado por 40 personas locales contratadas, quienes reciben alimentación, transporte y agua para poder dedicarse plenamente a esta labor. Junto con voluntarios nacionales e internacionales, trabajan día y noche para:
Rescatar tortugas perdidas y/o atrapadas entre rocas.
Vigilar y registrar las amenazas en las playas (caza furtiva, depredación, turismo, etc.)
Asegurar que las crías lleguen sanas y salvas al mar

How did we achieve this?
For more than 25 years we have been dedicated to ensuring that sea turtles find a safe place to reproduce in Boa Vista Island. To do this, we set up two base camps, far away from the villages, covering 15 km of beaches from June to October.
Our team is made up of 40 locally recruited people, who are provided with food, transport and water so that they can fully dedicate themselves to this work. Together with national and international volunteers, they work day and night to:
Rescue turtles lost and/or trapped between rocks.
Monitor and record threats on the beaches (poaching, predation, tourism, etc.).
Ensure that hatchlings reach the sea safety.
