Juneteenth Jamboree

June 19th, 2020

6:30 at McCoy Park in North Portland

June 19th is an important date in Black History in the United States. On this date in 1865, a group of Union Soldiers marched into Galveston, Texas. It was then, over 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that General Gordon Granger finally informed the Black People of Texas of the declaration that acknowledged their freedom for the first time. In honor of this Black American Holiday, and in celebration of the Black Community of Portland, The Talented X is asking you to join us in lifting up the voices of the oppressed. To join us in bolstering our disenfranchised Black Neighbors & Businesses we need so dearly. To invite people from every race, every religion, and every neighborhood in NoPo to come show solidarity with us. Black Culture is American Culture.

At this Jubilee; there will be Black musicians, artists, and business owners to support. The Talented X has started this crowd fund to pay these people for their attendance, service, and general participation in celebrating this auspicious day. Donated money will also be used for utilities, equipment, and marketing.

Black business owners will receive payment to set up at this event, while those of Hispanic/Asian/White culture will be asked to donate a fee to set up. This fee will be donated to The Black Resilience Fund in order to help stem the tide of systemic racism. Gentrification has pushed Black owned businesses out of NPDX for too long, and we hope to change this disturbing pattern of white washing. To do that; there must be an ongoing & concerted effort to lift up those in our Black Communities that have fewer means to find proper education, housing, mental health assistance, and business opportunities than their cultural counterparts. These communities need our help now, especially due to the current issues related to COVID-19. If you are reading this message, then you can assist. The ideals behind this event are by not meant to imply that people of other ethnic backgrounds haven’t been disproportionately damaged by racism in this country. This movement is meant to liberate the Black Community of Portland. Hopefully, this is just a step in reform to all.

On Juneteenth, 2020; we will meet as one. A unified voice sending the message that we are responsible with forming the foundation of a Portland that is community led, not police ruled. On June 19th we will dance, sing, tell stories, read poems, listen to our neighbors, watch movies, eat food, and gather around a shared goal for a brighter, more inclusive future.

It is a top priority to make sure this event is as safe as possible for all to attend. In light of COVID-19; organizers will be working under MCHD guidelines as much as possible regarding public safety & social distancing.

Who are the Talented X?

We are a brand new, grassroots activism organization forming in St. Johns, Portland. Below is our mission statement.

The Talented X is to empower the black community, to demand black liberation, and to fiercely fight systemic racism in the Pacific Northwest. We are here to find justice for the black community and be a voice for the unheard. We will propel our movement through issues related to law reform, women’s rights, education, mental health, gentrification, and inclusion.

Ultimately, our goal is to be a certified Non-Profit. The Juneteenth Jamboree is to be our first action outside of the BLM Protests in St. Johns.
