Juneteenth Fundraiser for Atlanta Bookstore!

About 30 years ago, Sister Nia had her sights set on a big corporate job in Atlanta, but that job turned out to be the best thing she never had...

She was interviewing during her senior year at Clark College (known today as Clark Atlanta University). She had all the right credentials. The company was impressed with her skills. But Sister Nia said there was one thing they didn’t like: her afro, which she rightfully refused to give up.

“I had been natural since 1982,” she said. “I wasn’t going to give up my power.”

That situation catapulted Sister Nia into what would be her greatest destiny: opening Medu Bookstore — what I and so many other book-lovers consider to be a national treasure in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1992, Medu launched independently in Greenbriar Mall in southwest Atlanta. There’s so much history tied to this award-winning jewel of a business... (I can't even share it all!). But what I will say is THANK YOU, Sister Nia! By taking bold, courageous steps to dictate your destiny, you've provided a refreshing escape for me - and so many others - to discover our own. Medu is a sweet oasis. It’s given new black authors a space to sell their work and tell their stories... it’s a never-ending history lesson for kids and adults...a gathering place that makes us feel right at home.

Now it's our chance to pay it forward and I am humbly asking for your support! In honor of Juneteenth, please help me raise $1,865, a significant number that represents the year of black freedom - June 19, 1865.

Rest assured that every dollar will go a long way to helping Medu continue its life-changing work of educating and enriching the lives of all people. Black book stores are few and far between. Together, we can keep this one standing!
