WHO WE ARE:

The Free Black Women’s Library - Detroit is a free, black feminist pop-up book bike and trading and borrowing library that centers black women and femme authors inspired by OlaRonke Akinmowo’s The Free Black Women's Library in Brooklyn, NY.

WHAT WE DO:

The Free Black Women's Library-Detroit is a book bike that celebrates, amplifies and provides space for black women's voices and stories. This mobile bike library brings black femme literature to the neighborhood in order to provide representation, education and liberation through pop-up black feminist bike trading and borrowing libraries and biblio installations.

YOUR DONATIONS WILL HELP US...

BUILD A CARGO TRICYCLE:

We want to collaborate with Brightmoor Maker Space and Detroit Community Schools to build cargo tricycle that will house The Free Black Women's Library-Detroit mobile library!

Brightmoor Maker Space partners with local entrepreneurs and organizations to refurbish tricycles and create beautiful woodwork. Detroit youth get to work with trained artists and professions in their wood shop and bike shop. These young people will  be paid for this project as well as be the leaders in product design with us.

IMPLEMENT BLACK FEMINIST EDUCATION & TRAINING:

Since our beginnings, we have wanted to create opportunities to host black feminist courses, book clubs, book release parties, biblio and art installations and fellowship programs in Detroit and southeast Michigan. Your donations will help us build out our programming capacity and enlarge our impact within our community.

YOU CAN ALSO DONATE BOOKS:

By  September 2020, our library aims to gather 500 books written by black women and femmes. Purchase from our wishlist at Pages Bookstore and donate new and gently used books from your own library.
