I own 1850’s in Juneau and while volunteering to deliver food to volunteers, workers, and victims, I found there was a missing link of where victims could turn to support. We have been raising funds from the beginning and have recently made our 3rd disbursement of funds to victims. When victims contacted me for assistance, I would send them all the resources I acquired from nonprofits or just people offering to help others that have helped others.
While we have disbursed $8,369 in funds raised, the victim list has grown and donations subsided. These victims are not only waiting on insurance payouts but contractor delays in rebuilding. The city applied and was denied emergency relief. Nonprofits are only able to cover essentials. And what these families really need right now is financial support. While they continue to pay their mortgage/insurance, they are now also paying rent or splitting families to stay in family/friends' homes/basements. It’s absolutely gut-wrenching to hear their stories.
Betty Meeusen (volunteer) and I have created a “tornado fund” account at Farmers and Merchants Credit Union where donations can be dropped off. They are the only bank that we could set up an account where two signers are required for fund withdrawals for victim disbursement. Please contact Pam Gubin - relationship banker [phone redacted] [email redacted]k with questions regarding this account.
