June for Justice

Tax deductible
It seems like for the entirety of my life I have seen black people lose their lives senselessly at the hands of police and racism. A few weeks ago the world was shown what can happen to a black man who simply chooses to go for a run. Shortly after we saw what can happen to a black woman who simply… stayed in her apartment. Then we reached a tipping as we watched a police officer kneel on George Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. 3 minutes of which happened after Floyd had gone unconscious, after begging to be allowed to breath.

To be silent is to be complicit. I won’t be silent. I’ll be spending each day of June running to raise awareness for the issues woven into our society and raise money for organizations who work to bring reform to these issues. I don’t know how this will go for me, the most days I’ve ran consecutively in the past has been 15, and it was 3 years ago. But what I do know is that each time I go for a run I do not have to be fearful of being attacked because of the color of my skin. I realized that I can use the pain and frustration I have felt over these senseless killings, and channel them into something good. With pain comes progress.

How can you help? I ask that you reflect on your own experiences and the experiences of others and think of how we can move forward towards equality. Have the difficult conversations and be open minded. If you are able, I ask that you donate to the GoFundMe linked below. Whatever is raised will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union. I’ve set the goal at $846, for the 8 minutes and 46 seconds George Floyd was kneeled on. There are two ways you can donate, either a flat donation or a per mile donation. Per mile donations will keep me challenged to push myself each day over the 30 days. A flat donation can be made directly to the GoFundMe, for a per mile donation please message me. I will likely run around 135-150 miles. I also want to give the option for donors to choose a day for themselves where they can give me a distance to run, a pace, a segment, or any other challenge they choose. I will upload all of my runs to my Strava which is linked below.

I chose the American Civil Liberties Union because they are an organization that not only demands accountability in cases like George Floyd, but also works at all times to ensure justice for all. For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation's guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.
