Hi, my name is Lucas Mittman. I am 12 years old and I live in New York City with my parents, younger brother and our dog, Goldie.
I am hoping you can help me raise money for a cause that is very important to me. I am attempting to raise money to purchase two defibrillators. One will be donated to my temple, Temple Shaaray Tefila, located in Manhattan, and the other will be donated to Liberty Hall Cathedral of Praise in Brooklyn - a congregation that is very important to me, because my nanny is an active member of that congregation and she is one of the most important people in my life.
I have decided to focus my time raising money for defibrillators because, in the event someone has a heart attack, a working defibrillator could be the difference between being able to save a life, or not. Unfortunately, according to the American Heart Association, in 2015 around 326,000 people suffered from cardiac arrest and the survival rate was only around 10.6%. In 2015, there were 320.1 million people living in the U.S. That means just 2 years ago just over 1% of the U.S.’ population suffered from cardiac arrest. By placing more up-to-date, working defibrillators in to circulation, I am hoping to help make that number decline!
This is also a personal story for me. Defibrillators have been used by, or used on, several people in my family. My maternal grandfather is a pediatric cardiologist and has saved many lives because of access to a working defibrillator. On the other side of my family, my paternal grandfather's life was saved during a heart episode. Acess to a working defibrillator is the reason he is still here with us today.
I can’t think of a better way to impact the lives of two communities and help countless families to keep their loved ones safe than to lead this effort. I hope you will consider helping me and spreading this message so we can reach my goal of $3,000. If we can raise this money by January 15th, we can help a lot of families - maybe even yours!
