My family began Mukasi, Oakland’s first Ghanaian restaurant, as a way to supply demand for my aunt’s famous jollof rice and okra soup. During the pandemic we decided to begin selling plates so our dishes were more accessible to those who were not familiar with Ghanaian food. We have a passion for cooking and sharing the taste of Ghana with the world.
Mukasi has had some success in the past, but has faced challenges due to deaths in the family, COVID-19, and personal emergencies. These challenges have caused us to stop operating, but there is still a demand for our authentic Ghanaian cuisine. My family is now looking to raise money in order to re-open our dream - sharing the taste of Ghana with customers! The ingredients and dishes served at the restaurant are a form of soul food that connect our family to Ghana and bring comfort and nourishment to those who eat it.
