I’m Valerie, reaching out with gratitude and humility. Today, more than ever, I want to share where we stand. My uncle—Lynn Kyle Scribner—and his partner have finally been offered a new apartment in San Francisco, a glimmer of hope after years of heartbreak and instability. But as anyone who’s ever faced starting over here knows, the move-in costs, security deposits, and first/ last month’s rent are staggeringly high. We’re doing everything we can to gather what’s needed, but even once in the door, our family will be starting with almost nothing: bare floors, no beds, no basic furniture or kitchen supplies.
It’s overwhelming, but we’re holding onto hope. This new apartment means the world after the devastating 4th of July accident that changed our lives forever. My uncle—our family’s most generous soul—suffered catastrophic injuries from a fireworks explosion, losing vision in his right eye despite emergency surgery. His recovery will be long, with more surgeries still ahead, and the medical bills have only added to the mountain we’re climbing.
