Julius Goes to La Mama Umbria

Hello!

My name is Julius Powell and I am a current rising Senior at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. I recently was awarded a scholarship to attend the world-renowned Director's Symposium at La Mama Umbria International to study and create among theatre makers from around the world.

La Mama Umbria is a non-profit cultural center and artist residence founded in 1990 by legendary theatre pioneer, Ellen Stewart. Dedicated to artistic experimentation, research, and learning, La MaMa Umbria is a place where artists from around the world meet to create, and to share work and ideas. Housed in a 700 year old monastery just outside Spoleto, Italy, the center is less than two hours from Rome.

Studying Theatre at Sarah Lawrence has been the joy of my life. Working not only alongside amazing artists in our faculty but also with the amazing artists that I call classmates and friends has taught me about collaboration, empathy, and interpretation. Performing, for me, was and has always been something sacred—a practice that transports the mind and body to a number of different places, mindsets, and emotions.

Attending the La Mama Umbria Program’s Director’s Symposium to continue to gain insight into the ways that different artists approach the craft of theatre-making would mean the world to me. I find myself frequently questioning what is the best way for me to explore character creation? How can exploring this aspect of the human experience transform me, and what does this story mean to those who are watching? The La Mama Theatre finds its roots in giving opportunities to artists that ask these questions, to artists who are daring and willing to explore new and inventive ways of approaching what theatre can be. There is nothing that I find more rewarding than asking these questions, approaching what performance can be differently and inventively, and being open to making as many mistakes as possible.

The La Mama Umbria Scholarship covers the workshops and master classes in addition to housing, however all remaining costs (flight, additional fees, passport costs, etc.) are not covered--and unfortunately, I am not in a financial position to cover these costs. This opprotunity is a rare one, and one that is quite humbling, and although I certainly wish I was able to cover these costs with my own money, I am unable to do so within the amount of time that I would need it--which is within the next few weeks.

Any assistance that can be provided would be so immensely appreciated. A simple share would also be appreciated.

Thank you,
Julius
