On October 16, the final game of the MRDA Championships was held in Texas. Through no fault of his own, an official was injured at the game's conclusion when a fight broke out.
At the end of the game, NSOs in the center track are usually completing paperwork, and this was the case at this game. Julius Freezer, an official with experience in both MRDA and WFTDA, was working center track. At the time, it was thought he received a sprained ankle and knee. Upon returning home and receiving a doctor's evaluation, he has been out of work for a week and used up his paid time off from work.
After a week with no improvement, he is now seeing a specialist for more tests. This fundraiser is to help cover the costs not paid by primary health insurance such as co-pays, deductibles, and time missed from work. An injury can be a stressful thing, and hopefully not having to worry financially will be one way the derby can help.
Most NSOs do not carry secondary insurance for derby, as it is not required. Any funds not directly used to cover bills will be donated to other derby folks in need, or used to create a travel scholarship administered by Fanta & Freezer.
Since Freezer's diagnosis is still up in the air, we don't know how much will be needed as of yet. The biggest immediate concern is missed time from work.
Thanks so much for your help and support, and the words of kindness! Please reach out to Bettie Mercury with any questions or comments: she is managing this campaign with Freezer's blessing.
(Note to everyone: Fanta & Freezer's real last name is DeSoto, and Fanta has all access to receiving donations. Freezer is working on getting better.)
I've also updated the fundraising goal to reflect the clearer diagnosis from 10/24: that surgery is looking more likely, and would have a 4-6 month recovery/rehab time. Hopefully insurance claims from the event will be completed by then and this fundraiser will no longer be needed!
