Julio's Heart Needs Your Help This December

Meet little Julio, a brave 7-year-old whose bright smile and infectious giggle light up every room, despite a life filled with challenges most of us could never imagine. Born with Down’s Syndrome and complex cardiac issues, Julio’s journey has been one of courage and resilience. His devoted mother tirelessly sought care through Mexico’s national healthcare system, only to be told time and again that his condition could wait. But when Julio grew lethargic, the urgency became undeniable. At 2 years old, he was referred to Merida for pediatric cardiac care. He underwent surgery, only to receive an adult-sized pacemaker—a device too big for his tiny body.

A year later, a trip to Mexico City was needed to replace that pacemaker. As Julio grows, his lead wires have required repeated replacements, with the most recent in mid-June. Now, doctors say he’ll need a dual-chamber pacemaker in December, meaning another grueling journey to Mexico City. Each trip—airfare, hotels, taxis, food, and lost wages—places an unbearable financial strain on Julio’s mother and grandmother, who pour their hearts into keeping him strong.

Lean On Me International (LOMI) and the Isla Mujeres Scholarship Program have been there for Julio, but we need your help now more than ever. Your donation can ease the burden of this December’s medical trip, letting Julio’s family focus on his care instead of crippling costs. Every dollar brings relief, hope, and a chance for Julio to keep smiling. Please join us in supporting this incredible little boy. Donate today through GoFundMe. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for giving Julio and his family a fighting chance.

With gratitude,

Julio’s mother, Isabel, is working on her Master's Degree in Civil Law with the assistance of a scholarship from the Isla Mujeres Scholarship Program. Isabel is an excellent student who is working very hard to get her degree so she can begin practicing law to help others. Isabel has already begun giving back to the community by doing an internship and volunteer work with DIF. DIF is a Mexican public institution focused on social assistance and family welfare. DIF is responsible for child protection, family services, and coordinating social assistance programs.
