Julio Colon is a 59 year old loving father and grandfather from Brooklyn, who is coming back home after being incarcerated for the last 8 years. We (Dhara, Nour and Ryen) had the privilege of meeting and getting to know Mr. Colon while volunteering with the NYU Parole Advocacy student group. All the funds you contribute will directly support Mr. Colon with some immediate needs for his reintegration, including housing, utilities, home furnishings, clothes/shoes, transportation costs, food, personal hygiene items, as well as a cell phone and laptop to help him get settled, find stable housing and employment, and turn a new page.
Mr. Colon is a kind, hilarious, deeply reflective, and genuine man who regularly encourages us to live better lives and take care of ourselves and those we love. Mr. Colon is committed to his Christian faith, which he has spent the last 8 years rebuilding and deepening. While incarcerated, he spent his time supporting others in the prison community through tutoring his fellow inmates, leading sobriety support groups, and cooking elaborate meals for his friends and correctional officers alike. Mr. Colon is overjoyed at the opportunity for a second chance to spend the rest of his life being present for his two children and five grandchildren. Once he is settled, Mr. Colon hopes to open a food truck to share his love of cooking with those around him. In our work with Mr. Colon, we have left every conversation inspired by his humor, incredibly kind spirit, positive outlook, and commitment to constantly grow for both himself and his family. Any and all support is greatly appreciated as Mr. Colon prepares for this next chapter.
