Hello! My name is Julie J, a drag artist, producer, and community organizer based in Brooklyn, NY. As many of you reading this know, I am a proud trans person and over the past year I have begun the process of medical transition. I am writing to you today as I have come to realize that it is not something that I can achieve financially on my own. Most folks who know me know that I am an immensely private person (never one to ask for help), and for much of my transition I’ve attempted to keep as quiet as possible for several reasons—one being my financial position and two my safety as a visibly transitioning person in a world that doesn’t necessarily value trans folks as human beings—certainly not when they are on the journey to self-actualization. The next step that I hope to take in my transition is known as Facial Feminization Surgery (also known as FFS). I have done extensive research on several providers, surgeons, and doctors and feel that I have found a medical practice that will provide the care that I am looking for and—most importantly—feel safe receiving. The difficult part of this is that many providers of gender-affirming care don’t accept insurance, and that is the case for me now. In addition to the savings that I have worked very hard for, my hope with fundraising is to get coverage for a good portion of my procedure, as well as allow me the funds to recover before returning to what I love most: performing and being an advocate for my community. There are many things in this life that I haven’t had the chance to experience being queer and trans, and I don’t want the life I’m living to always be on the defense. I’m ready to live a happier and fuller life and I believe continuing my medical transition will be a step towards brighter days. As I look to the future, I hope that it is one where I can move through the world without concern for safety and with a more aligned physical appearance that allows for greater peace in my heart.
