JulieFest is a free, open-to-the-public women’s arts and music festival in Joplin, MO.
It will be held on Saturday, October 26th from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the 500 block of Joplin Avenue.
We’re keeping the event free for attendees and vendors because we want to be a platform to spread arts and culture in the community. For this reason, we’re relying on generous donations, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts to pay for JulieFest operations!
While it may seem that we have achieved greater equality in the music industry than in decades past, it is still important that we foster and encourage positive attitudes toward female musicianship – not only for listeners but for young girls with budding musical aspirations.
A study by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative shows there is still a massive disparity between male and female representation in the music industry. The study found:
· In 2017, 83.2% of artists were men and only 16.8% were women.
· Of 2,767 songwriters credited, 87.7% were male and 12.3% were female.
· A total of 899 individuals were nominated for a Grammy Award between 2013 and 2018. 90.7% of those were male and 9.3% were female.
Similar festivals already exist and have been successful in nearby cities such as Tulsa, Wichita, Springfield, and Fayetteville. JulieFest is a way for Joplin to do its part to promote equality and effect positive change in society.
It will also be an opportunity to celebrate our community’s talented female artists as well as provide and “open mic” outlet for amateur musicians, poets, writers, comedians, and more.
