Our friend and colleague, Julie Sloane, has had quite the year. In the summer of 2018 she faced her first cancer diagnosis. She underwent a successful lumpectomy and then went through several months of radiation into the fall semester, all while teaching her full course load at NYU. But in February, her doctors found ovarian cancer, and Julie was forced to take a medical leave of absence from work while undergoing chemotherapy. The good news is that the chemotherapy has shrunk the tumor enough to make Julie a candidate for surgery. Two weeks ago, her doctors performed a hysterectomy, and we are feeling confident that they have gotten all the cancer out. Unfortunately, the timing of the surgery leaves Julie unable to work for yet another semester. To boot, her daughter Jen is also unable to to support her at this time, having suffered a broken leg a month ago requiring surgery and a fundraiser of her own.
The funds from this page will be sent directly to Julie, to help cover her expenses as she recovers. If we reach our goal, that should cover her through the fall semester, until she is hopefully able to return to us triumphant in the spring. No gift is too small (or too big!) to help Julie.
