Julia Tuttle is the Mother of Miami. Yet she receives scant recognition for her monumental accomplishment. PLY-Miami is intends to remedy this with our mural, a tribute to her, by and for the Miami community.
PLY-Miami Fiber Art Collective is a group of 10 talented, dedicated women. We are creating a colorful, textured mural in her likeness. We are knitting, stitching, crocheting, hand painting, and hand quilting leaves and flowers to embellish our larger-than-life fiber art collage. It measures 10 feet by x 15 feet.
Julia will be clothed in the CIty of Miami colors, a lively patterned orange floral dress. She emerges from a verdant tropical jungle of Old Miami with an orange blossom pinned to her bodice, beckoning "Come Henry, bring us your railroad." He did.
HistoryMiami Museum is partnering with PLY-Miami to present Julia Tuttle The Mural at its summer 2021 exhibition, It's a Miami Thing. The exhibition and our mural coincide with the 125th anniversary of Julia Tuttle's founding of our city.
Your contributions make it possible for PLY-Miami to purchase the cloth, yarns, and other materials and equipment necessary to complete this historic project.
All donors will be acknowledged in our publicity materials and will be invited to the opening reception of It's a Miami Thing. We thank you!
