Over the past year, Jules has been a fierce and devoted advocate for her mom, (Theresa/Terry), working tirelessly to keep her safe and ensure she receives the care and dignity she deserves.

What we thought was a simple slip and fall quickly became a challenging medical journey—marked by dozens of emergency room visits, repeated hospitalizations, and consultations with numerous neurological specialists—all in an effort to understand the sudden onset of her Mom's seizures and find the right course of care.

She was ultimately diagnosed with a rare and complex neurological condition: Atypical Absence Seizures with Postictal Psychosis and Paranoid Delusions. While absence seizures are typically brief, she experiences severe clusters—multiple seizures occurring back-to-back—that require emergency medical intervention and hospitalization to stabilize her and allow her brain time to recover. This condition is extremely rare in adults, and her prolonged postictal symptoms make her case even more complicated.

Despite extensive testing and every effort by medical professionals, no clear underlying cause has been identified. The focus has now shifted to managing and reducing the frequency and severity of her seizures.

With each seizure, a piece of her has been lost. Her most recent hospitalization—triggered by a cluster of seizures and a serious infection—resulted in a significant and heartbreaking cognitive decline. She is now under Hospice Care, where the focus is on comfort and quality of life.

Throughout this journey, Jules has been trying to navigate the medical system and it has been incredibly challenging. Understaffed facilities, communication gaps, insurance complications, and the rarity of her condition have made it difficult to consistently secure appropriate care, medications, and support.

This experience has also taken a profound personal and financial toll on Jules. She lost her job and, soon after, her family home—sacrifices made while prioritizing her mother’s care every step of the way.
