On October 28, we took our 2 year old son Jude in for an eye exam. We had noticed some discoloration in his left eye, and took him in to get it checked out. After a brief series of tests, the pediatric ophthalmologist identified a growth in Jude’s eye and gave a preliminary diagnosis of retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye). We were referred immediately to one of the top cancer centers in the States for further testing and treatment.
The tests revealed that the tumor is malignant and advanced. They also revealed however, (thankfully) that cancer has not yet spread beyond the eye to other structures of the head. Treatment is to begin immediately. This coming week Jude will be admitted to the hospital and undergo extensive surgery to remove the tumor. The tissue removed will then be tested, and those test results will reveal whether systemic chemotherapy is needed or not. (Prayerfully we hope that he will not need chemotherapy) In the future, routine testing will be required to ensure there is no further cancer development. Even if chemo is not needed post surgery, we’ll still have 3-4 trips at the least in the coming year.
We’re so grateful for God’s goodness to us in this! We’re grateful that however extensive the surgery is, it is a necessary and it will be a life-saving one. The doctor overseeing Jude’s care is one of the three best worldwide for retinoblastoma. We are also grateful that thus far, nothing is showing that the cancer has spread beyond the eye. We are also so blessed that some friends/family have already stepped forward to help in both practical and financial ways. We are so grateful to not be walking this hard road alone. So many have let us know they are praying. Thank you to each of you.
If you’re able, we’re asking for help with the costs associated with Jude’s diagnosis and our situation. In addition to the medical charges, travel and time off of work for Korina also play a role in the overall cost. Thanks for reading through and for considering how you can help!
