Jude Porter's Eagle Project - Houston Arboretum

My name is Jude Porter, and I am currently a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 642, working towards obtaining my Eagle Scout rank. I have selected the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center (the Arboretum), located in Houston, Texas, as the beneficiary of my Eagle Scout Service Project. To accomplish my goal, I must have financial support. With this in mind, I am asking for any amount of a donation that you feel will be beneficial toward my Eagle Scout Service Project and will be used to the benefit of my project goal.

The mission of the Arboretum is “to provide education about the natural environment to people of all ages and to protect and enhance the Arboretum as a haven and as a sanctuary for native plants and animals.” It is one of the first nature education facilities for children in the State of Texas, providing services to nearly 200,000 visitors each year. The Arboretum also offers nature education to more than 10,000 children annually through programs such as their summer camps. In fact, I was a volunteer “Nature Ranger” for the Arboretum’s summer camp program, helping out in the summer camp classrooms.

The Arboretum needs conservation efforts, such as removing invasive species and adding native plants. Restoring healthy habitats will help rehabilitate endangered native ecosystems so that the Arboretum can be enjoyed now and by future generations. My Eagle Scout Service Project will consist of the beautification and landscaping of the Arboretum by facilitating the removal of invasive species of plants, as well as the removal of overpopulated indigenous species of plants from a one-half acre of land in its lower northeast area. My project will help to keep the area diverse (biodiversity). Additionally, I will hire a company with a wood chipper to grind down the brush and fallen branches. The mulch created by using the wood chipper will break down quickly in the wild, providing nutrients to the soil and increasing the area’s organic matter. My total estimated cost for these items is $1,555.00.

I plan to execute my project on Sunday, October 9, 2022, and Sunday, October 16, 2022. To assist me in making my project possible, please consider donating. Any donation amount is appreciated and will help out the Arboretum. Thank you for your financial help in supporting my Eagle Scout Service Project. Any excess donations will be donated to my beneficiary, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center.
