I write this on behalf of Katie and Danny, Jude’s parents

Katie is my daughter.

Jude Hazard is a 15 year old kid from Sunderland and part of a very private and tight knitted family.

Katie his mother explains:

"We had been told Jude had asthma for months, back and forth to the doctors, I wasn’t convinced, perhaps Mother's instinct, because when the doctor stated to come back in a month that very same day his breathing became worse.

I took Jude straight to A&E where after initial checks were done he was blue lighted to Freemans Hospital in Newcastle and had open heart surgery"

The OP:

Surgeons removed an 8cm tumour from his heart, he also had a cardiac arrest while on the table, he flat lined for 2 minutes, they were told Jude could possibly have brain damage due to this.

Jude finally came around and all was initially good.

They then sent off the tissue to be tested - It came back as cancer and they were unable to operate to remove the what was left of the cancer. Very aggressive and extremely rare. Only 35 cases out of 100million to ever have this and all in adults

All throughout this recent episode the surgeons and doctors have all said what a strong, courageous boy Jude is.

Jude is well liked and a very sociable kid. He loves nothing more than being out with friends, eating out and loves good food. He attends the gym daily, and is such a bright boy, loving, generous, caring and a thoughtful young man.

And would not hurt a fly. Anyone that ever meets Jude praises him in what a polite lovely boy he is.

We are so blessed to have a son like Jude.

He is just an amazing. kid . The family of 4 of are such a close unit. They do everything together........

They do not do social media and are very private but we need to do this for them and for this loving young boy called Jude.

They have been told Jude has 8-17 months- but this will not stop the fight to find a potential treatment - There are options abroad but it will take funding for the family to explore the options.

The funds raised will be attributed towards Jude's medical treatment, hospital stay, any travel costs, and post-operative recovery. Any funds remaining will support his ongoing cardiac and cancer care.

Every second is of essence now and getting the money in place will enable quick reactions and the ability to explore the options abroad soonest.

Full Medical Diagnosis:

Initial Presentation-

Presentation: Admitted to Sunderland Royal Hospital on 13th July 2026 with a 3-week history of worsening shortness of breath. An echocardiogram revealed a left atrial heart mass.

Emergency Surgery: Transferred urgently to the Freeman Hospital. During emergency sternotomy on 14th July, the mass prolapsed and completely blocked blood flow through the heart.

He was successfully placed on cardiac bypass by the surgical team.

Pathology Findings:

A large (>8 cm) malignant spindle cell tumour arising in the left atrium, identified as an intimal sarcoma (an exceptionally rare and aggressive vascular cancer).

A separate metastatic nodule was identified and removed from the posterior mitral valve leaflet.

Genetic testing (FISH) confirmed an MDM2 gene amplification, characteristic of intimal sarcoma.

The tumor margins at the atrial mass site were close and incompletely removed.

Staging & Investigations

Staging scans (CT, FDG-PET, and MRI) showed no clear evidence of distant metastatic spread elsewhere in the body.

However, a multidisciplinary review of Jude's post-operative heart MRI concluded that abnormal tissue remaining near the mitral valve is likely small volume residual tumour rather than simple post-surgical healing.

Treatment Recommendations & Next Steps

Surgery: Because the tumour involves the mitral valve root, further surgical removal is not considered feasible by the cardiothoracic team, and cardiac transplantation is not an option for cardiac sarcomas in the UK.

Current Status:

The care team plans to offer a follow-up appointment to continue these discussions, and has also explored compassionate access to experimental MDM2 inhibitor medications through pharmaceutical companies at the family's request.
