Juanita Olvera Surgery Fundraiser

Juanita was diagnosed with cancer when she lived in Chicago as a school teacher. She was having a difficult time getting insurance and treatment, and moved to Maryland in part because she thought it would be easier to get insurance. Unfortunately that has not been the case. Three months ago she made a tough decision: raise $6,000 for surgery in Mexico before the end of August while the tumor is still operable. In that time she was only able to earn $2,000 towards the surgery. Juanita is a responsible, independent person and has tried to raise the $6,000 on her own by working weeks and weeks of doubles and overtime. She strongly believes in personal responsibility but is now willing to accept help as she feels that time may be running out for her. It has been heartbreaking for me and others who love her to watch her work so hard while battling increasing fatigue and other side effects of her cancer. Tuvo dificultades para conseguir seguro médico y tratamiento, por lo que, entre otras cosas, decidió mudarse a Maryland, donde pensó que sería un poco más sencillo obtener un seguro. Por desgracia, este no ha sido el caso. Hace 3 meses Juanita tomó una decisión complicada: recaudar $6,000 USD para realizarse una operación en México antes de que termine el mes de agosto, ya que su tumor es todavía operable dentro de ese tiempo. Desde entonces, solamente ha logrado juntar $2,000 para pagar su cirugía. Juanita es una persona responsable, independiente y ha intentado recabar estos $6,000 USD de manera personal trabajando turnos dobles y tiempo extra por semanas y semanas. Ella cree en que cada uno de nosotros debe ser responsable de uno mismo, pero en estos momentos ha accedido a aceptar ayuda ya que pronto puede ser demasiado tarde para ella. Hablo por mí y por otras personas que somos colegas suyos al decir que su situación me ha roto el corazón, ya que hemos visto como día a día trabaja tan duro a pesar de estar luchando con las complicaciones del cáncer que padece.
