Juan Sebastian’s Cancer Treatment

Martha Lusia is a longtime family friend. In Colombia, her and my mom grew up together as she was the daughter of my mom’s family’s housekeeper. In 1992, my mom and Martha even both gave birth to daughters. Tragically, Martha’s daughter passed away when she was only 18 from epilepsy. 

Martha’s son, Juan Sebastian (20) has recently been diagnosed with testicular cancer. After going through chemotherapy treatment, tests confirmed that the cancer had spread to his kidneys and lungs. Juan Sebastian is now at the end stages of his life

Martha is a proud, hardworking women. She has been an auxiliary nurse for 6 years, which has allowed her to be the head of house, supporting both her mom, who is also epileptic, and her son. In the last few months, Martha has been selling arepas on the corner of her house to cover the cost of treatment. Now that Juan Sebastian’s cancer has advanced, she’s been forced to face the hard decision of whether to continue working to make ends meet or to stay at home taking care of him.

I am hoping to raise enough money to help alleviate some, if not all, of the financial burden that Martha’s had to face so that she can spend this time with her son. If budget and time permit, I would also love to fulfill Juan Sebastian’s last wish of being able to see the beach for the first time.
