Sawyer's Fight Against VSAA
Donation protected
On July 29th our world got turned upside down. I took Sawyer in to the pediatrician because I noticed a weird bruise on his arm. They checked his blood levels and all of his counts were low and our pediatrican told us that this meant it was most likely lukemia. We were told to pack a bag and head up to Primary Children's Hospital to confirm. After a bone marrow biopsy we were told he dosen't have luekmia but just a severe viral infection, and that he would be perfectly fine. At this point in time we set up a Go Fund Me account to donate Primary Children's becaue we were so thankful that Sawyer didn't have a serious illness and wanted to give back to this amazing hopsital. But that was only the begining of what Sawyer has been going through.
After 52 days of worry and stress, a dozen transfusions, three bone marrow biopsies, 2-3 doctor's appointments a week, four days of in patient care, and countless needle pokes we officially have our diagnosis: Very Severe Aplastic Anemia (VSAA). It's a very rare and very serious deficiency of all types of blood cells caused by failure of bone marrow development. We will be starting ATG treatment tomorrow, which will take four days and then a couple days of monitoring depending on how he is doing. So total we will be in the hospital for 8-12 days. Right now he is considered transfusion dependent, and most likely will be for at least another month. Most likely will be out of school for at least two months. The treatment can take six months to see the full effect, but if we don't see it kicking in we could be looking at a bone marrow transplant. The prognosis is good for the ATG, and even for bone marrow transplant if it comes to that.
We are still going to donate the money we raised to Primary Children's because this is an incredible hospital and they are doing so much here to help so many children. Because we've had people ask how they can donate direclty we've decied to set up a Go Fund Me account. Please don't feel obligated, but we wanted the option to be available. The bills are stacking up and reaching out for help is always weird/awkward but we are just so thankful that Sawyer is in the best hands possible. We will also be using the page to keep the updates all in one place. This is a really scary time in all of our lives and we are just taking it moment by moment.
Thank you all so much for the outpouring of love <3
