Supporting the Clark Family

Donation protected
On Wednesday, August 3, we received the heartbreaking news that my brother-in-law Nick died after rescuing a drowning swimmer at Lake Sunapee. As we grieve this unfathomable loss, I am setting this up in the hopes that we can support my sister Kate and her wish to create a scholarship fund for their children. She's the strongest woman I know and it will be a long road ahead for her and the kids, please give this a read and consider chipping in.

Last week, Nick died, leaving behind his wife, Kate of 17 years, and four children, Noah, Amelia, David, and Gideon.

Nick was scheduled to have the replacement of his aortic valve on August 9th. He spent a couple of days having wonderful family time with my sister and their kids. Because he was preparing for surgery, they had the opportunity to say all the things that a family would need to say. They spent the day at Lake Sunapee State Beach in their home state of New Hampshire last week.

While in the water, Nick encountered a swimmer who was drowning and, of course, went to help her. The rescue was successful, and she walked away fine, but Nick collapsed on the beach. There were two nurses and a doctor working on him until the ambulance came, but they were never able to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at New London Hospital later that afternoon. The rescue efforts were just too much for his faulty valve. If you knew Nick, it is not at all surprising that he died helping someone else. He loved all he knew, and was not shy about sharing that love.

More about Nick

Nick was a steadfast listener and counselor to many, and he made his life's work caring for those in their most difficult times whether it was addiction, depression, or marital challenges. He founded North Country Christian Formation to serve in New Hampshire, and Kate worked alongside him faithfully for years to make sure those who needed help would get it. In the days following Nick's passing, the family has heard from many individuals who Nick had a significant impact on over the 15 years that he and Kate served together.

He was a loving, proud father who enjoyed spending time with his family outdoors, exploring new places and activities, and having tickle time with his children. Life in New Hampshire held special meaning for Nick as he eagerly embraced sugaring, woodworking, gardening, timber framing, wood milling, and cider pressing. He took great pride in his gourd and pumpkin patch and his dark maple syrup.

Nick's homegoing has left a hole in the hearts of so many, and he will be greatly missed. Our lives are richer for having known this kind and generous man with a brilliant smile.

The Scholarship Fund

A scholarship fund has been created for Noah, Amelia, David, and Gideon. We know he would have loved to see all four of his children use their gifts to their full potential. Please join me in supporting Kate and the kids in making that happen.
