Hi, my name is Bobby, Jr., and I'm 13 years old. Just before Halloween, I was feeling pretty sick. After going to the emergency room and having some tests run, I found out I have acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The remission rate for kids like me is 98 percent, and the cured rate is 90 percent, so the folks at the Arnold Palmer Hospital Pediatric Oncology department got right to work giving me treatment. In just a few weeks, I've had dialysis, several rounds of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and a few spinal taps. I've responded so well to treatment that I was able to go home on Friday, Nov. 15!
But I still have a very long road ahead of me. They say I'll need at least three years of outpatient treatment. My mom has been with me around the clock, and my brother Ben has been helping her take care of me. My dad works full time, and although we have insurance, getting me well will cost a lot. Besides our regular bills, there's added expenses such as gas, food, etc. while we travel back and forth to the hospital multiple times a week. My family needs help managing this new normal for us, and to concentrate on making me better. Your help will be SO appreciated! Thank you!
