On Thursday, June 23, 2016 the Elk River rapidly reached a record crest of 35’ and my parents’ home (our childhood home) was lost to the flood in Clendenin, WV.
Our family has lived in the house since my grandfather built it in 1942. My father was born in the house in 1949. Several of the neighbors are elderly and my father spent most of the time, as the water was coming up, helping them along with keeping my daughters safe. My 4 & 6 year-old girls were at MawMaw and PawPaw's house. For 24 hours my parents and daughters were stranded and could not get out. Thank you to the ones that dropped food and water to them from a helicopter.
As they owned the house and was living on a fixed income ,they did not have flood insurance and will have to work to salvage the home and start the rebuilding process. They are both retired and this process will be a long and costly one. The process has so many facets as it has both physical and mental aspects that one must work to overcome.
They not only lost all to the flood, they lost personal items from our family and loved ones that are no longer with us.
As a Man and more importantly as a Father you just want to “Protect” your loved ones and in this case there is no way to stop the hurting! All you can do is offer help and a shoulder to cry on.
My father told me to “be a good son” and I replied ok, I will also work on being a good DAD! I was raised to do things myself and do not like to ask for help but it is times like this that people want to help and we can use it.
Thank you to all that have donated items and your time to help in the process. Without all of you we could not have made it this far.
Regrettably they are just one of the many that have suffered from this flood. Our hearts go out to the community and those who are suffering due to this historic event.
Any amount you can contribute will be deeply appreciated, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping my parents and any others in a similar situation
All funds will only be used for rebuilding their home and lives and for that purpose only. Everything in the house was a complete loss!
