Why this cause?
On 27 March South Africa entered full lockdown due to the threat of covid 19. While this early lockdown has been widely lauded internationally, and was critical in saving countless lives, it brought with it unavoidable humanitarian challenges.
In South Africa lockdown means that the millions and millions of people already living below the breadline lose the only income they had to buy food every day. Savings does not exist for these people – instead they are locked into a shack the size of most people’s bedrooms, where they share the room with an average of 4 other people (when they’re lucky), and worry every day whether they will be able to eat that evening.
South Africa already had an unemployment rate of 29% before covid. Those people were taken care of by friends or family members who could earn meager wages. Now, that story is vastly different. The lifeline they had was officially cut off now.
What are we doing?
One Bucket, One Adult, One Month
A friend and I created an initiative called Jozi Together a week before lockdown began. Jozi is our South African lingo for “Johannesburg”, and Jozi Together is a group of people who want to get involved everywhere we can to help the people who have been left with nothing.
One initiative we have started that is working very well is an initiative where you buy buckets of food, where one bucket feeds one adult for one month, and those buckets are then delivered to people who reach out to us for help. The buckets (sometimes in the form of bags) cost ZAR 300 each – roughly CHF 16.00, USD 16.50, EUR 15.20, or GBP 13.50.
What have we already accomplished?
Through this initiative we have already helped close to 600 families from all over Johannesburg.
How can you get involved?
Quite simply you can help by sponsoring buckets. We are not an organisation, and all proceeds go to buying buckets.
Please note, we receive roughly 92% of your donation after the GoFundMe fee.
Please also share this to your Facebook and social media, to help us raise more funds!
