In September 2016 my mom, Joyce, started losing her ability to walk to the point where she couldn’t even lift herself onto the bed from the wheelchair. In addition, by June of 2017 she lost her eye sight. My sister, Amanda, my brother, Brian, and I took my mom to Mayo Clinic to see if they could find out what was wrong. After many tests, they were able to diagnose her with microvasculitis and got her on a treatment of steroid infusions. Thank the Lord, that treatment has given her back some mobility.
Unfortunately during the second trip to Mayo Clinic, they gave us the news that there is nothing they could do to help her eye sight. It is amazing what is taken away from you when you lose your eye sight. Our dad passed away in 2012, so Joyce relies on her children and our spouses, my grandma, and wonderful family and friends to help her with everyday needs because of her blindness and low mobility. But if you know my mom, she is the sweetest person you know, the best listener, and always ready to give the shirt off her back. She has such strong faith in the Lord, which has given her that joy deep in her heart. We have learned these past couple of years that beauty can come from ashes.

Recently, we have come across a great invention that can give her a better quality of life and give her more independence! It can instantly read text from a book, smartphone screen or any other surface, recognize faces, recognize dollar bills, read labels on products, and even recognize colors on clothing. She would most love to read again, especially her Bible! The money raised here would pay for the OrCam MyEye device.
