My mother Joyce has breast cancer. In December, she had a mastectomy to remove a cancerous mass and in addition, removed 20 lymph nodes, mostly from her left arm, where doctors later detected cancerous cells and advised her to continue treatment.
She started chemotherapy on February 10, and her doctors have prescribed up to an additional five rounds of treatment and additional radiation.
My mom has been out of work for several weeks due to her doctor's appointments, surgeries, and recoveries, and we expect she will be unable to work for many more months while she undergoes treatment and makes a full recovery.
While doctors are optimistic that her treatment plan will be successful, there have been other hurdles for her to overcome. Once she informed her landlord of her diagnosis and treatment plan, her landlord revealed that he intends to sell the house in which she is living and that she will, unfortunately, need to move. Her doctors also later diagnosed her with Lymphedema due to the removal of her lymph nodes, which is a lifelong condition that requires special compression garments and therapies to prevent swelling and control pain.
The money raised will go towards covering some of her medical bills and living expenses, as well as moving costs while she recovers from her surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments.
My mom raised my sister and I as a single parent. She waited tables for a good amount of our childhood. She always supported our dreams and goals. She bought me musical equipment when I was a kid, so I could learn how to play. She drove me and my drums to all of my performances as a teen. She took me to concerts when I was too young to go by myself. She's always been a very cool and supportive mom.
My sister and I are doing everything we can, but we are asking for a little extra help so our mom has everything she needs during this extremely difficult time. Thank you for reading this, sharing this campaign, and for donating.
