Joy for April Harper Encephalitis Journey

Donation protected
This is April Harper, a remarkable women from Des Moines, Iowa. She is an advocate for women and loves doing community work with disadvantage populations.  April is an owner of an organization that assists adolescent females with life goals, challenges, and self-actualization. April is also a cancer survivor.

On October 24th, 2018, she experienced a seizure at work and was admitted to the hospital on the same day. She had no history of seizures or epilepsy, so this was a surprise to family, friends, and co-workers.  She was discharged on October 26th, 2018, with hope that she was experiencing an isolated event with postictal presentation. She was fortunate enough to have a week off of work to recover from her seizure and expressed that she wanted to do it in Atlanta with her two children.

While traveling to Atlanta, April's daughter observed that her mother's cognitive presentation was declining and suspected that there was something more serious going on with her mother. As soon as they made it to Atlanta, April's son also observed the declining presentation as well and had her taken to the emergency room on October 30th, 2018.

After April arrived to the hospital with this presentation, the medical team performed multiple test to figure out what was causing the behavioral changes.  Based off of her recent seizure on October 24th, 2018, the medical team performed MRI's, EEG's, CT Scans, and Ultrasounds. In addition to her neurological state,  she had two surgeries  to observe her intestinal track and colon.

After days of testing, April's brain scans were coming back showing abnormalities.  This led to a diagnosis of a form of Encephalitis.  Most forms of Encephalitis are bacterial and viral in nature. After even more test, they figured out that April's was not bacterial or viral.  April has a rare form of Encephalitis that is autoimmune. It explains her altered consciousness and the occurrence of her isolated seizure.

As of today, April has begun treatments for her rare form of Encephalitis.  She remains unconscious. This go fund me is to raise money for her out-of -pocket medical expenses which she has already incurred.  The goal is to maintain her medical bills as they come in.

Her Son and Daughter thank everyone in advance for the emotional and financial support.
