Joy Elliott & Doug Brown Fundraiser

Donation protected
Thank you so much to the community of caring folks who have donated to Doug & Joy. Thanks to all of you, our goal has been reached! You can continue to help out by dropping off a meal, working in the garden, running errands or donating again in future. Please check in with them to arrange times for the first three suggestions.

The funds are being used for driving to appointments, alternative & traditional healing treatments, medicines, paying the ongoing bills such as mortgage, power, internet etc. Just keeping the whole show going!

Also a longer term dog sitter for their dog Lucy has been found, so thank you all who offered and spread the word.

We are the friends of couple Joy Elliott and Doug Brown, who live in Belleisle, NS. They had a cycling accident on Sunday June 9 when a dog suddenly ran out in front of their tandem in Beaconsfield. Joy was transported by ambulance to Kentville Hospital with a serious concussion, right shoulder and left leg injuries and spent a week there. Doug suffered an arm injury but was able to return home the same day.

Joy is a kind, generous, thoughtful and strong woman. As a self-employed landscape architect, she has contributed to the design of many Annapolis Royal features such as the children’s playground, the O amphitheatre and the boardwalk. Working as a team, Doug has been the muscle for planting trees and shrubs for her various projects.

Joy has also served on the board of various non-profits including Arts Place and the Belleisle Marsh.

Doug currently operates Oakhaven Bike Barn and Oakhaven Bakery at a reduced capacity since semi-retiring two years ago. They had a stall at the Saturday Farmers Market for 20 years where Joy sold the bread and treats that Doug baked. Doug helped operate the Annapolis Royal winter market at the Legion and has served on the board for the summer market, NSOGA (Nova Scotia Organic Growers Association) and ACORN (another organic association).

This couple would give you the shirts off their backs. Over the years, they have truly given so much to so many of us and our beloved community near and far. We are asking for your support, as Joy navigates what maybe a long, slow and challenging recovery. Neither can work at the moment as Doug also needs healing time and is now Joy's primary caregiver.

Since being home it has been two steps forward, one step back in her healing, with extreme tiredness, many naps, some dizziness. Not her usual busy self at all.

In addition, although you may want to reach out to them, we kindly ask "No Visitors” nor texts or calls. (Though if you'd like to drop off a meal that would be welcome by prior arrangement.) Due to the concussion, Joy needs absolute quiet and much rest for optimum healing. Thank you for respecting this.
