My name is Lorna Berndsen and I am ecstatic to share with you a heartfelt story about by dearest cousin, Brett Berndsen, on his journey in qualifying to compete in the upcoming FIS Snowboard Jr. World Championship SBX in Rogla, Slovenia, March 30th to April 7th, 2016.
THE BEGINNING
Brett's love of snow sports began with a pair of skis at the age of 4. A few years later, at the age of 7, he challenged himself to speed to the bottom of the hill strapped to a snowboard. From then on, Brett was in full-throttle mode toward his mission to become one day, a snowboarding champion.
Brett was inspired and fell in love with Snowboard Cross (SBX) after watching the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics - it was as if he "found his calling". At that time, he asked his parents if he could take a year off hockey to join a Snowboarding Development Team. His parents, Mark and Jody, could see his intense passion and drive for snowboarding in his eyes, that they could not say "no"; they were just as excited for him as he was to start his dream of becoming a professional snowboarding athlete.
ACHIEVEMENTS
After training with the British Columbia (BC) Development Team for two years, Brett was scouted by the BC Provincial SBX Team as a result of his drive to pursuit of excellence. While being a member of the BC SBX Team, Brett carved his way upwards through various competition standings:
* 2014 FIS BC Championships, Canada (1st place)
* 2014 FIS South America Cup, Chile (3rd place)
*2014 European Jr. Nationals, Austria (9th place)
*2015 Jr. National Championships, Canada (8th place)
*2015 NorAm Cup Championships, Canada (21st place)
*2015 Canada Winter Games (5th place)
*2016 Nor Am Cup, USA (11th place)
THE CAUSE
I am reaching out to the world to help my cousin Brett to fulfill his dream of representing Canada, in the Jr. World Snowboarding Championship in Rogla, Slovenia which is fast approaching at the end of this March 2016.
This is a self-funded championship event, and thus Brett is urgently needing money to share in Team Canada's expenses.
ALL money raised will go direclty to:
- travel expenses
- medical staff
- accomodations
-transportation
-food
-coaching fees
-entry fees
-lift tickets
BRETT'S COMMITMENT
The amount of Brett's dedication that I have witnessed him give to the Snowboard Cross sport over the years is unparallel to no other 19 year-old young person I know. Brett trains daily at a gym facility and cross-trains in BC Enduro mountain biking race series. He dedicates endless and tireless hours on the mountains, fine-tuning his skill set to conquer the end result - the podium.
Brett is currently training with Team Reign SBX and will be travelling with them to Chantecler, Quebec for the 2016 Canadian Jr. National Snowboarding SBX, (March 21st-26th) enroute to the 2016 Jr. World Championship in Slovenia at the very end of this March.
