Journey to Normalcy: Support J.D.'s College Dream

Hello, my name is Jhon Chaves, and I am the very proud parent of John D. Chaves (J.D.). My son was diagnosed as epileptic with an intellectual disability when he was only one year old. J.D. is now 21 years old, and to put it very mildly, he has, and continues to have, enormous obstacles in his life due to his disability. One thing his mother and I have vowed as his parents is to never give up on J.D. living a long and healthy life with normalcy, regardless of what obstacles he faces, and that same fervor was instilled in our son. Although we know that he is an amazing young man with great potential, we also know that he requires special accommodations. J.D.’s thousands of seizures (sometimes as many as 20 a day) have had a major impact on his intellectual and self-esteem development. J.D. has always been the odd man out because he was epileptic, and it is unfortunate that he knew it. He stated, “I just want to be normal and do normal things, Dad.” At times, as parents, we felt helpless, but nonetheless, we did what we could and stopped at nothing, always giving hope to our son.
So, why am I seeking your help? Please let me tell you. At the age of 14, J.D. became a viable candidate for Right Frontal Lobe Brain Surgery. The frontal lobes are considered our behavior and emotional control area in the brain and home to a person’s personality. The frontal lobe is responsible for higher cognitive functions such as memory, emotions, impulse control, problem-solving, social interaction, and motor function. Damage to the neurons or tissue of the frontal lobe can lead to personality changes, difficulty concentrating or planning, and impulsivity. Having full knowledge of the high risks of this surgery, including the possibility of death, J.D. chose to have this life-altering surgery. Following this brain surgery and a procedure called Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), which is a medical procedure that involves the use of a device to stimulate the vagus nerve with electrical impulses primarily used to treat epilepsy and treatment-resistant depression, J.D. now has the opportunity to attend a specialized college program for someone with his disability and limitations. That program is The FIU Embrace Education Program.
The FIU Embrace Education program for non-degree-seeking students is a three-year, non-degree, certificate, inclusive post-secondary transition program for students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The primary goal of the program is to offer a comprehensive and integrated university-based education that is inclusive and accessible, and promotes competitive, integrated employment and independent living in the community. This program provides access and participation in a variety of program activities through a system of support provided by peers, faculty, academic and social mentors, an employment liaison, university-based resources, and other key project personnel who work directly with students to ensure individual and program goals are met.
After a few interviews and orientations, his mother and I have found a place for our son. J.D. is beyond elated about this program, and more importantly, he finally feels understood and included. We are humbly asking for your support to send J.D. to this program. Please help J.D. attend this program and experience what “normal things” are like at college, and help bring a smile to the face of a young man who is truly a warrior. Any amount of support you can give will help J.D. be one step closer to this life-changing opportunity.
