Journey to Baby Shankman

Where to start?  How does one begin the story of our infertility? Thinking through all that we've endured the last eight years and writing it down is quite the mission.

Month after month, I faced the very thing that made me a woman; it never gave up. Even after having late periods, and desperately hoping that the moment had come where I get to run and jump into my husband's arms and scream at the top of my lungs, "WE'RE PREGNANT!" I dreamed of what kind of moment that would be.

The hardest part of our journey is the unknown and undiagnosed. Why? How come two very capable and responsible people have trouble, but those who fall very young, irresponsible or just don't want kids are given such a gift?

Early this month, after conversations with some pretty amazing women of strength, knowledge and bravery, I made the call. The appointment has come and gone and I heard what I needed to hear... "It's very possible."

Everything costs you something; it could cost you time, patience, energy, collateral, or money. In my case, it's going to cost all of those and some. It's not easy to put a price on motherhood, when close to 84% of couples conceive naturally within 1 year of attempting pregnancy and 92% of couples conceive naturally with 2 year of attempting.

The quick 10 minute call regarding the cost of what could turn into a beautiful baby I get to call my very own had me feeling all the feels; the frustration of our healthcare system, the hopefulness of our modern day technology, overwhelming options that cost more than our cars combined, all the while thinking about how it's possible

There are many more calls, appointments, tests, medications and HSA payments in my future, but these two moments were two of the biggest steps we've taken so far.

We are grateful to have friends and family that keep us in their thoughts and well wishes, and those truly mean the most. But we are now faced with the unfortunate circumstances of having no fertility treatment coverage on our medical plan, leaving us responsible for all costs associated with pre-natal & genetic testing, numerous procedures, costly shots & medications, regular visits and ultrasounds; totaling upwards of $20,000... for one cycle.

Your donations would be one of the greatest blessings we could ever receive, because it would mean we are one step closer to holding our baby.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us.

With Love,

Kyle & Jade Shankman
