Journey of Healing for Bex
On May 24th, Becky's life as a busy single mom of four faced a traumatic change. Without warning, her legs began to lose feeling while she was driving with her boys on a busy Vancouver highway. We thank God for His protection that enabled her to get the car and the kids off the road safely. But this was only the beginning.
Within hours, after being transferred to Royal Columbia Hospital by ambulance, she became unable to feel her legs, move her legs, stand or walk.
What has happened since:
Becky now has a team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, physio and occupational therapists working towards a diagnosis and future recovery plan. She has been undergoing numerous MRIs, CTs, nerve and muscle tests as well as a lumbar puncture.
That last test brought on new issues, a spinal fluid leak that now needs to be repaired. It has been a long haul for Becky and her family since this began on May 24th.
Definitive answers to "what/cause" are not yet in. There have been small blessings. Very slowly, topical feeling has been coming back, but the ability to move hasn't changed much. The spinal fluid leak has stopped all physio visits until it is fixed. The hospital time line is uncertain.
What We Do know:
Future expenses will be significant. * Loss of income as she will not be able to work this summer as planned. * Home modifications to her rental to help with movement/transfers, such as safety bars etc. If she ever leaves her present rental, it will need to be in the same condition as
when she first rented, so that cost also needs to be considered. * Household cleaning and meals for 5 for the transition to home care * Other expenses not yet accounted for, depending on long range outcome.
Note from Garnet: Our kids are doing well and treasure their time visiting mom which is a key morale booster - for mom helping to speed her recovery and for the kids to help understand what is happening. One of the children has had an extremely difficult time with moms
sudden illness. With funding, we'd like to schedule some visits to a counselor to work through some of the fears and troubling thoughts around the events that have happened.
