*Update!* We have raised $6,416 total through crowdfunding as of June 19, 2019. That includes $640 that we raised through Facebook crowdfunding campaigns. We are putting our current funds toward costs of materials, administrative needs and to cover our upcoming day of professional development for Sacramento teachers in August. We're still crowdfunding, and new crowdfunding contributions will go toward establishing 501(c)3 status, materials, administrative costs and future professional development opportunities we hope to offer teachers.

Journalists in Classrooms (JiC) is a grassroots community organization that seeks to increase news literacy among k-12 students by sending reporters into classrooms as guest speakers. The program has three overarching goals: 1.) To humanize journalists; 2.) To illuminate the relationship between an independent press and a functioning democracy, 3.) To arm students with the tools to distinguish fact-based storytelling from advertising or fake news.

We are fundraising through our fiscal agent California Press Foundation (CalPress) to cover costs of of a day of professional development around news literacy for a group of Sacramento teachers. Funding will also go towards maintaining our website, costs for CalPress to process funding, educational materials for guest speaker visits, and expanding JiC’s reach. JiC is not part of CalPress.

We need resources if we are to maintain momentum. If you share our mission to help the next generation grasp the value of and the need for real journalism in a world filled with disinformation, you can help! Our all-volunteer effort, now eight months underway, is heading for a pivotal milestone this summer. We have just commenced fundraising to keep on track. We need a total of $30,000 by August. No donation is too small.
