Hi!
My name is Joslyn Fritz, I am currently a senior at UCSB where I'm studying Environmental Science. I am preparing to leave on a Wildlands Studies Program in early January for about 6 weeks. We will be backpacking throughout Peru near the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon rainforest.
Specifically, we will learn field research methods by participating in ongoing research and by conducting group projects at several biological stations. We will also gain an understanding of the ecological impacts of local and national government policy, Amazonian society, resource management practices, and development activities. This will all be done through hands-on experience and our research methods will be experimental and academic.
Overall, this is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity; however, like many students, I'm struggling with money. The most expensive part of the trip is the initial cost of the plane ticket and we are instructed to get the ticket as soon as we are able to; so I am hoping I can reach this goal as soon as possible. The plane ticket costs about $1,300 but the rest of the $2,000 goal will be used to get the necessary supplies I will need once I'm there; such as: a backpacking backpack and the right shoes.
This is such a wonderful experience to be preparing for. I transferred in to UCSB a year ago and never thought I would have the opportunity to study abroad.
