Josie’s New Heart and Recovery

Donation protected
Josie Samson has been in a continual fight for her life since she was nine days old. In her lifetime so far, she has undergone 38 surgeries, 5 of which were open heart. She was born with Aortic Stenosis, Cardiomyopathy, and Coarctation of the left ventricle. Today, she is 20, battling Severe Heart Failure as a result of all prior diagnosis. We are calling on our friends and family to help Josie and her surrounding family during this time. She is in need of a heart transplant and/or LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) to continue in her fight! Go Josie!!

Recently, after visiting the clinic for a routine checkup, doctors noticed her heart was weaker than normal and she was carrying over 10 pounds of fluid around/in her organs. Josie was immediately admitted to Nebraska University Med Center for more testing and treatment. Upon testing, the Heart Failure Team determined that Josie was in Severe Heart Failure that needed a plan of action ASAP! Her heart ejection fraction is showing that the left side of the heart is only pushing 10% of blood through, leaving 90% of blood behind. This is now creating issues for her lungs, liver, and kidneys, as they are not getting the filtration they need. Since being admitted on Jan 20th, Josie has received a very aggressive med set, trying to stabilize her heart and other organs. Because the way her body works is so unique, the Heart Failure Team here at UNMC is fevertly trying to figure out what works best for her.

On January 29th, Josie went into Cardiac Arrest at 5:45 in the morning. This was caused by low potassium levels, seizing her heart. Almost immediately, her Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) kicked into action, defibrillating her 4 times and bringing her back to us. We are thankful that the UNMC team worked fast to correct this imbalance. Since then, Josie has been in the Telemetry Ward for Cardiac Failure as she continues to fight for her life. Next steps are still being determined. It is sure though, Josie needs a new heart, and soon.

With Josie currently receiving treatment and care from UNMC, the bulk of her family and support are nearly 8 hours away in Denver, CO. Marnie, her mom, is determined to stay by her side, leaving her job to care for Josie in the hospital as well as down the road, post-transplant and/or LVAD.

Your kind donation will be used for medical bills, travel, easing the burden of expenses, and to build up savings for whenever the heart transplant and/or LVAD may take place. Thank you for taking the time to read about Josie’s condition. We appreciate any and all help! I will continue to update as we know more.
