Josie’s Journey: Healing Hearts, Holding Hope

Josie is a beautiful, deeply loved little girl who will be 2½ this February. She is the cherished daughter of Matt and Laura and the adored baby sister of Mikey. Over the past year, they have been facing a journey no family ever expects to walk… watching their daughter slowly lose the abilities she once had while desperately searching for answers.

Josie was slightly delayed in reaching milestones, but after her first birthday, her parents began noticing concerning regressions. By early 2025, Josie had lost the ability to stand independently, her balance became unsafe, and her communication and coordination began to fade. Doctors initially suspected Rett Syndrome, a diagnosis that would mean Josie would never walk, talk, or live independently. Her parents waited more than five agonizing months for genetic results, trying to emotionally prepare themselves for the life they believed was ahead.

Then the results came back: Josie did not have Rett Syndrome. While initially hopeful, they quickly learned this meant something far worse. Doctors still had no explanation for her rapid decline.

This December, everything changed. Josie began experiencing seizures and was rushed to McMaster Children’s Hospital, where she and her family spent Christmas in a hospital room. An MRI finally gave the devastating answer. Doctors believe Josie has a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disorder called a lysosomal storage disease. Her brain is deteriorating, and her condition is life-limiting. While genetic testing is still underway, her medical team has prepared the family for a greatly shortened life expectancy.

Josie is no longer able to walk, speak, or eat independently. She is fed through a tube and requires constant care. Her parents have completely rearranged their lives so that someone is always home with her, while also trying to protect a sense of normalcy for her big brother, Mikey, who doesn’t fully understand why his baby sister can’t play or talk like other children.

This fundraiser exists for one simple reason:
to give Josie’s family the ability to focus on loving her, caring for her, and making the most of every moment they have left together.

Funds will help support:
* Medical and travel expenses to and from McMaster Children’s Hospital
* Specialized equipment and supplies
* Home nursing and care needs
* Lost income from reduced work for both parents
* The everyday costs of caring for a medically fragile child

*If you don’t feel comfortable donating directly to the family, please feel free to consider donating to the Niagara Children’s Centre, McMaster Children’s Hospital, or Ronald McDonald House Charity. Matt and Laura have witnessed firsthand how these organizations provide invaluable care and support to families who need it most.

Every donation, share, and message of support helps carry this family through the heaviest season of their lives. If you’re able, please consider walking beside Josie and her family.

Thank you for being part of their journey. ♥️
