Did you know that only 58% of young people in foster care graduate from high school, and only 3% of foster youth graduate from college? Can you help me beat the odds?
My name is Josiah Green, a former foster youth and artist from South Central Los Angeles. Not only have I graduated high school, but I’ve also been accepted into my dream school, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) for the Photography and Media BFA Program this Fall.
Since a young age, I’ve been aware of the positive effects that art can have on a child’s life. It was a coping mechanism while moving from home to home. Now, it’s my ticket to a better life.
That’s why I started a GoFundMe: To help pay for college.
As a state-dependent youth from 1998 to 2017, I do not have parents or relatives to help cover the costs of tuition. Without a cosigner, I am unable to obtain private student loans.
Despite all of this, I have been able to cover the majority of tuition through merit-based scholarships, federal grants, and federal student loans.
I currently have $39,920 of $48,660. I still need $8,740 by the end of August.
Since graduating high school, I have worked hard to prepare for college. Here are some of my accomplishments:
I’ve worked at the Hammer Museum, a contemporary art museum for 2 ½ years as a Visitor Experience Representative (VER).
I've interned at Art + Practice, an art-based nonprofit museum for 1 year as the Communications Intern
I've interned at Gallery 38, a street-influenced art gallery for 4 months as the Media Intern
I've been accepted into CalArts and Otis College of Art and Design
With a college degree, I hope to mentor the youth who are coming from a similar upbringing. Since I know firsthand the combined power of art and education, I want to be on the front lines, helping our underrepresented youth who come from South Central.
Please help me raise money for school by donating or by simply sharing this GoFundMe. Any amount donated is welcome and deeply appreciated.
