Joshua Stecher’s Total Fire Loss Recovery
Donation protected
Dear loving and gentle friends and family,
So I promised some sort of acknowledgment of financial needs when everything started to settle and the majority of the paperwork was in.
First, yes, the fire for all residents of the third floor was called as a total loss and is also declared unsafe to enter. This sucks as there are nonflammable precious things and likely one very safe backup to my assuredly dead computer. Not asking for any of this to be replaced, some things just can’t, likewise I’m not going to ask for any antique books in my collection, they’re gone, I’ll slowly rebuild collections of books over the years with just different copies.
Additionally, the insurance plan I had was for total replacement of things destroyed, so furniture, kitchen and baking things, a variety of tea, etc. will all be replaced with something new and equivalent (likely with some debate with the insurance adjuster, etc.). All in all not a bad position to be in.
What I lost most was knowledge...all my of my notes, papers, presentations from grad school and postdoc. I absolutely have backups of all of my data up to the present. Also, I now no longer have the computer programs for quantum mechanical modeling and figuring out loci of crystal lattice perturbations and the resulting spectra and phonon modes of the modeled nanocrystals.
Standard programs for everything else, I have already licenses for and they’re active and downloadable, yes I have all of the license codes and everything.
Anyway, I’ve never been in a position to request funds for things that are necessary, but not in the forefront of one’s mind. A single license for these programs are usually in the realm of $4k - $6k. Likewise some of the texts I had I referenced often for work/academics/nerdy curiosity.
So as a general query from people I really wish I wasn’t asking funds for, is this something you’d be interested in aiding me with?
So that’s where I am. The primary programs and a few of the more important reference texts ballpark at over $10,000 (scientific markup, a common complaint in my lab). Donate, if you will, what you won’t miss, let’s nickel and dime this to pieces! Below is the GoFundMe link to donate, I can give you updates with a Facebook message if you’d like. Let me know what you’d like to do. Much love to you all, now and always!!!
As Always,
Josh
