My 17-year-old brother, Joshua Peschel, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome on Wednesday, December 7th, which came from him having the flu. On Monday the 5th, he tested positive for the flu and by Wednesday night he was no longer able to walk, move his arms, or do anything on his own. He was admitted to Texas Children's Hospital in Katy and received 5 rounds of IVIG treatment over 5 days. While there, he started physical, occupational, and speech therapy. On Thursday, December 15th he was transported to Texas Children's in downtown Houston for inpatient rehab. While here, he will go through hours of therapy each day to get him back on his feet. They predict that he will be here for the next 4 weeks or so. As he is already gaining a bit more strength each day, he has a long road of recovery ahead of him. He has had very rough nights/ days in lots of pain, but he is very motivated to do what he needs to do to get back up on his feet and be able to do basic daily living functions by himself again.
Any donations will be greatly appreciated as his overwhelming medical bills accumulate during his road to recovery. We appreciate all the love and prayers from everyone thus far and for the weeks/ months to come.
Update 12/18/2022:
After a very rough day of therapy on Friday, December 16th, they realized the IVIG treatment did not work as well as they had hoped. The therapy was too intense for the weakness and partial paralysis he is experiencing. He has been moved to the ICU for a plasmapheresis treatment. This treatment will start today and they said expect 5 treatments over the next week. It is a more complex treatment then IVIG but they are hopeful that this treatment will speed up the recovery process. Please continue to keep Joshua in your prayers ❤️
Update 12/24/2022:
Today was Joshua’s last day of his plasmapheresis treatment and the port for this was taken out of his leg today. This treatment and all the prayers are working! He can move both of his arms, his fingers, and we are ready for his legs to be next! In the next few days, he will be moved back to the inpatient rehab unit to get him working to get back up on his feet in the near future We very much appreciate all the love, support, and prayers and just ask to keep them coming!
Update 1/8/2022
Joshua is getting better and better with each day. He is able to do more and more as days go by. He has been receiving 3-4 hours or therapy each day. He is able to walk longer distances without assistance, and he climbed a flight of stairs this week with minimal help. He will get to come home on January 17th, which we are all super excited for! This has been a tough time, but he has powered through, and we are very grateful for the progress he is making. After he is home, he will still need to go to outpatient rehab 3-4 times a week and will also have regular appointments with a neurologist. This will all take place in the Katy/Houston area as well. We thank you for all the prayers, as they are definitely working. We thank you for the donations.
