Josh's journey (from transplants to cancer)

My name is Sarah and I am a school counselor. I am the sole income for my family as my husband Josh has a rare blood disorder, hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis is a disease that collects iron and deposits it on your organs, essentially turning them to stone. He was first diagnosed at age 38. As a result he had a heart/liver transplant in 2012. As a result of the transplants, he has become a type 1 diabetic. His sugars are not well controlled due to the vast array of medical issues he has from the blood disorder and the transplants. There have been more ambulance rides than I can remember and one day where I found him blue on floor and had to do cpr while waiting for help to arrive. We have since gotten a continuous glucose monitor but his medicare does not cover the cost of the supplies for this. It is very expensive, but has saved his life several times. He also has end-stage Kidney Failure as a result of his blood disorder yet they won't approve him yet for dialysis. He has ascites of the liver (it is leaking liver fluid into his body) as organs typically last about 10 years and this past June was 10 years. He has some brain damage from an infection he received called nocardia in 2013 due to his compromised immune system and it traveled to his brain. He also has several other diagnosis and complications from his blood disorder. Just recently he was diagnosed with cancer. Transplant meds are known to cause cancer as patients age.

My husband's body is slowly killing him. He was a very active man who even played semi-pro soccer in his youth. However, now everything he does is a struggle. Sitting, standing, walking, etc. are all very taxing on his body. Yet he never gives up. He is determined to live.

All of his issues combined with the low pay of being an educator has put a strain on our finances and many times there is more month than money causing us to go deeper in debt. I've heard that people have used GoFundMe to pay off bills and so I thought I would try even though this is very outside of my comfort zone. I believe in working hard to support yourself, but I am just not able to support us with all of his needs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
