Hey, as most of you have watched unfold on my social media, I broke a toe badly on Tuesday night when a seemingly sturdy wooden chair collapsed under me while screwing in a lightbulb. The bone snapped and perforated through the skin in two places.
I called Metro Plus Medicaid to check that I was covered for an ER visit (because they have randomly dropped me about six or seven times this year), and the woman insisted that I was fully covered for a visit.
I went in, finally saw a doctor who said that the break was severe and that he likely wouldn’t be able to set it because of the shape in the x-rays, and to return the next day to see a podiatrist.
Before returning the next day, I called Metro Plus Medicaid again to check that I was covered for a second day, and they told me that I wasn’t even covered for the first day and that I had been dropped two days ago and they “don’t know why she told you you were covered, but there’s nothing we can do about that”. Because this is a serious injury that requires surgery, I decided to have a second visit anyway.
I reapplied for Medicaid while waiting, and if accepted, they may or may not retroactively cover the visits, but they would not cover surgery either way. So I asked the doctors to just force the bone back into place by any means, and after four tries and the most pain I’ve ever experienced, they (maybe) succeeded.
I hate to ask for assistance, but I believe in mutual aid. I need help with my living expenses for this month because I can’t work because I can’t walk. I’m also receiving no insurance assistance for pain management meds or antibiotics, so that’s all full price out of pocket. All I’m asking for is rent plus a little to help with my meds. If I have tens of thousands in bills from uninsured ER visits because of Medicaid’s failure, I’ll worry about that later. I’m very bummed that a simple accident involving one of the smallest bones in my body could potentially accrue a life ruining amount of debt, but it is America, and it is what it is.
I appreciate everyone who has checked in on me whether y’all are able to contribute or not. Thanks for your support!
