Challenging Antisemitism in the Labour Party

I am Josh Jones, until May 2018 a Labour Councillor and Shadow Deputy Leader of the Council in Dartford. In April 2018 I was sued for defamation (slander) by Tony Greenstein for alleged defamatory statements he claimed that I had made of him at a Labour Party All Members Meeting, a year before, in April 2017. From the outset I made it clear to him that I had not said anything defamatory of him. At the meeting in question in April 2017, at which Mr Greenstein was not present, I was in fact seconding a motion challenging antisemitism within the Labour Party which demanded firmer action be taken in order to show solidarity with Jewish members and the Jewish community. If you are unfamiliar with Mr Greenstein a quick google search will give you some background on him.
In December 2019, I was successful in having the case struck out at the High Court. At that hearing the Judge held that ‘the claim discloses no reasonable grounds for bringing the claim” and judgement was entered against Mr Greenstein. Mr Greenstein was also ordered to pay my legal costs in the sum of £20,000. Unfortunately, Mr Greenstein has now confirmed that he is in receipt of social security and unable to pay the costs ordered by the court.
In order to defend myself in respect of these proceedings, and up to the point at which the claim was struck out by the court, I have already had to pay over £10,000 myself which exhausted all my savings and a significant amount of my salary each month. I am now liable for the remainder of the outstanding fees, of around £10,000.
I now need to ask for help. Dealing with this for all this time has put an incredible strain on me emotionally and mentally — but also financially.
I realise that they're so many worthy causes that require support at the minute and I feel terrible to be in the position to ask this.
