4/1 Update
Hello everyone!
I am beyond floored that collectively we were able to reach our goal so quickly. I am forever grateful to everyone who donated, liked or shared my posts or otherwise assisted in spreading the word. On top of already hitting our goal, the widespread criticism and backlash toward the admission's initial plan to cut Special Olympics funding has forced them to backtrack. I am so proud, but even with these successes, Special Olympics is still always in need of more and more funding to continue their mission of inclusivity through competition. As such, I am keeping the fundraiser going through April 27th, the date of my 50k race in Washington D.C. If you are willing and able to donate, please do!
Hello all,
My name is Joseph Gaule. As an undergrad at Villanova University, I spent 3 years on the Special Olympics Committee. Together, we worked, planned, and raised funds year round to put together the largest student run Special Olympics event in the world. On Villanova's campus every fall, we hosted sports ranging from long distance running and walking to power lifting, and it truly was the best weekend of the year. There is no greater celebration of life, inclusivity and competition than a Special Olympics event.
This week, Education Secretary Betsy Devos proposed widespread budget cuts to several programs, including $17.6 million from Special Olympics. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, we should all strive to protect programs like Special Olympics.
Though these proposed cuts may not pass in congress, the very idea that they could made me want to take action. On April 27th, I, along with my friends Alex Stimpfl and Andrew Ashby will be running the North Face Endurance Challenge 50k in Washington D.C. I will be running in my Special Olympics Committee shirt, and hopefully raise as much awareness and money as I can.
$1000 is nothing compared to $17.6 million, but it's a start, and I hope together we can blow past that goal, and inspire others to start fundraising campaigns of their own.
Thank you
