I’m struggling to find the words to describe how I feel after the sudden loss of my friend. Karen was two days away from celebrating her 41st birthday when a tragic freak accident at home took her from us, her devoted husband, and their three young children.  

I knew Karen since I was a little girl. I also feel like I knew her sister who died before she was born and her father who passed away when she was young. Her mother kept their memory alive and raised Karen to have a deep sense of loyalty and belonging. Karen was ambitious, strong-willed, and had a refreshing (and humorously sarcastic) outlook on life. She was truly one-of-a-kind.

I know that Joe, Karen’s husband, will provide the same foundation for their three children to thrive, despite their unthinkable loss. But the journey will be hard. Karen worked full-time and was an important contributor to the household income.
