
In Memory of Joseph “Joe” Roots MBE
Joe was a Husband, Father and Grandfather, in his spare time he was a Sea Cadet Officer.
The Family had asked that instead of flower please donate to his chosen charity.

Lt Roots joined Chelsea & Battersea Unit as a cadet and then later re-joined as Petty Officer Instructor in May 1982 and was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in January 1993, he commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant in 1998 and was promoted to Lieutenant (SCC) RNR in 2001.
Lieutenant Roots had a keen interest in ceremonial events during his career fulfilling roles including Officer of the Guard for Trafalgar parade and Platoon Officer in the Lord Mayor Show, he was also an extremely passionate boater who helped build up and maintain the fleet of boats used by the unit today.
Lt Roots took charge of TS Challenger in 2015 before handing over the ship in 2023.
He also held a full-time job, often working shifts work with the AA. His love for motors proved useful when repairing boats, especially after some of the cadets had used them.
In June 2005, he was awarded an MBE for his services to the motor industry.
Additionally, he dedicated many years to working with Wimbledon Tennis throughout the month of July
Lt Roots was a friend and mentor to many and has trained and impacted thousands of young lives during his time with us. He will be missed by us all and fondly remembered for years to come.
