Jose Rivera III is a 14 year old teen from West Bend, WI that was recently diagnosed with a very rare bone cancer called Metastasis Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma along with Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma. One can only ask why any child has to experience cancer let alone two cancers at the same time. Jose is the proud son of Kelly and Jose and attends school at Slinger Middle School in Slinger, WI. Jose started going to the doctor for pain. It was first thought the pain could just be growing pains, but the pain became worse and worse each day. An MRI and a biopsy was performed of Jose's right leg in early February 2016. Doctors then diagnosed Jose with this very rare bone cancer. Once the final results of the open biopsy were received our family learned he also has Osteosarcoma cancer cells as well. The cancer was located in the tibial diaphysis and the fibula of his right leg. A PET scan of his body and a CT scan of his lungs were also performed. Unfortunately, we found out that the cancer became metastatic and spread to Jose's lungs and the rest of his body.
Jose is currently being treated by a wonderful staff at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. It is hard for the doctors to give a prognosis because of how rare Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma is. Jose is only the third patient at Children's Hospital to ever be treated for this very rare cancer.
Jose is just finishing up his 3rd round of chemotherapy and will have another treatment in just a few days. The chemo treatments are being switched back and forth to treat both cancers. He is scheduled to have more treatments and then will be rescanned in late April to see how he is responding to the chemo. The 1st round of chemo really took a toll on him. He was having a hard time keeping food down, had a feeding tube inserted, became very ill and lost his hair. Rounds 2 and 3 of chemo were a bit different. Jose responded well to those. Round 4 treatment will be a repeat of the 1st (fingers crossed he doesn't get too sick again).
We would like to raise funds to assist the family with current and future medical expenses. The Riveras have a long road ahead of them and we would like to ease as much burden off of their shoulders as possible.
We truly appreciate your support!!!!
